Cartoonist and writer Fiona Katauskas has written an article in the Guardian celebrating the achievements of Parent Clubs. Fiona knows what she’s writing about – she’s been on the P&C at her sons’ NSW high school for seven years.
The article starts with a staple of Parent Club fundraising – the ‘democracy sausage’. As she points out, “These saintly sizzlers aren’t doing it from the goodness of their hearts…the story is much more prosaic: they do it because underfunded public schools need money.”
The article also covers other aspects of Parent Club activities – building community and improving communication between school and parents: “Finally – and perhaps most importantly – P&Cs are about building community, about getting together and getting involved.”
