Parents Voice in Government School Education

Supporting excellence in every classroom

The following article is provided by the Department of Education to keep parents informed about new initiatives in Victorian schools.

We all want to ensure Victorian children and young people get the best possible education. This means prioritising excellence in teaching and learning and ensuring the knowledge, skills and capabilities that students develop at school set them up for success in work and life. To achieve this aim, we recognise that teachers must have the most effective tools and support to teach our children and young people.
Below is a quick snapshot of some of the initiatives the Department of Education is implementing so teachers can deliver on this priority:

  • The department is supporting all government schools to implement the Victorian Curriculum F-10 version 2.0, an update of the Victorian F-10 curriculum that clarifies the knowledge and skills every Victorian student needs to learn during their first 11 years of schooling.
  • Teachers are being provided with the latest evidence of how students learn and resources to implement the teaching practices that are most effective in supporting learning, including for high achievers and students who need extra help.
  • All Victorian government primary schools are introducing a minimum of 25 minutes of daily explicit teaching of phonics and phonemic awareness, with full implementation by 2027. Teaching phonics involves children learning the important relationship between sounds and letters to read words. This is part of Victoria’s comprehensive approach to teaching reading that includes oral language, vocabulary, fluency, and reading comprehension. These are foundational skills, setting children up for successful learning outcomes throughout school and beyond.
  • In May, the Premier and Minister for Education announced a new Mathematics Position Statement outlining Victoria’s approach to teaching mathematics in government schools
and prioritising evidence-based practices aligned with how students learn.
  • The appointment of 4 inaugural Victorian Mathematics Ambassadors was also announced. Two Ambassadors are from government schools and 2 Ambassadors are from Catholic schools. The Ambassadors will promote excellence in the teaching of mathematics and strengthen family and student engagement and aspirations in mathematics across all school sectors.
  • The department is developing high quality lesson plans and providing better access for teachers across Victoria to quality curriculum materials, including independent and Catholic school teachers. More than 4,000 Victorian Lesson Plans for teachers to use and adapt in English (including phonics), mathematics, science, design technology and digital technologies are in development with more than 600 already available. Lesson plans are made by teachers for teachers and will be available across all learning levels from Foundation to Year 10. Watch a short video showing how Templestowe Heights Primary School is implementing the new teaching and learning approaches and using Victorian Lesson Plans.
