The Social Services Regulator (SSR) is an independent statutory authority that safeguards the rights of children and young people as well as people who use social services in Victoria. The SSR has recently taken on increased responsibilities to support safety for children and users of social services.
The SSR’s remit expanded in February 2026 to bring in new regulatory functions in line with recommendations from the Rapid Child Safety Review. The reforms mean that for the first time in Victoria, the following schemes are overseen by a single independent regulator with increased powers to detect, exclude and prevent people who present a risk from working with children:
