A State Parliament Inquiry into student pathways to in-demand industries released its final report. in September 2026.
The Legislative Assembly Economy and Infrastructure Committee’s report found that more action is needed to support students into in-demand industries.
Parents Victoria made a verbal submission to the Inquiry and is mentioned in the recommendations.
The Committee also found that more needs to be done to support higher enrolment and completion rates in vocational courses, especially for students belonging to disadvantaged groups.
Other key findings included a shortage of qualified career practitioners in Victorian schools, financial barriers for students from lower income backgrounds and negative perceptions about the value of pursuing VET pathways compared to higher education and universities.
Some notable recommendations from the report include
- ensuring that every government school has at least one qualified full-time equivalent career practitioner per 450 students.
- collaborating with Parents Victoria and/or the Victorian Parents Council to increase and improve the education of parents as it relates to the value of vocational education and pathways to in-demand industries.
- working with the Australian Government to reduce financial barriers to apprenticeships and traineeships
- working with industries, TAFEs and regional organisations to improve access to pathways into in-demand industries for regional students.
