Industrial action cancelled

There will be no teachers’ strike this Wednesday (19 August), as public school teachers have accepted the government’s pay offer.

The Herald-Sun reports that:

The in-principle deal passed on Monday after 79 per cent of Australian Education Union members voted in favour, cancelling a third 24-hour statewide strike scheduled for Wednesday.
The offer will now proceed to a vote of all employees for formal endorsement.

Parents Victoria CEO Gail McHardy said while families largely backed educators during the long-running dispute, the yes vote and scrapping of Wednesday’s strike was welcome.

“Now Premier Carroll needs to turn his commitment to fully fund public schools into action,” she said.

“Victoria needs to get on an equal footing with other jurisdictions, and that investment is essential if school leaders and educators are going to have the resources to tackle the other issues raised during this dispute.”
